Advice on Combining Results During the Transition to the ECL Modular Exam System
Dear Candidates,
As ECL adopts a new modular structure for its examinations starting August 2026, we understand that these changes may raise questions. This transition period is important, especially if you have already taken exams under the old system and need to continue or validate your journey under the new system.
Here are all the necessary clarifications to understand how your current and future results will be taken into account.
📋 Reminder: The Old System (Before August 2026)
For exams taken before August 2026, you had to fulfill two conditions to pass an exam (whether partial or complex):
- Obtain an overall average score of at least 60% across all evaluated skills.
- Obtain a minimum score of 40% in each individual skill.
🚀 The New System: The Modular Structure (From August 2026 Onward)
From now on, the four skills are evaluated as independent modules.
- A module is permanently passed as soon as you reach a score of at least 60%.
- Certificates will be issued to you for each module passed during the same exam session.
📘 Practical Case 1: Your overall average was insufficient (Before August 2026)
If you took an exam before August 2026 and your overall average score was below 60% (or if one of your scores was below 40%), the exam was marked as failed.
Even if you obtained more than 60% in one or two specific skills, no partial certificate could be issued to you because the eligibility criteria of the time were not met.
⚠️ Attention: The new modular rules are not retroactive. Skills validated individually during a failed exam under the old system cannot be converted into passed modules.
Therefore, you will need to re-register for all the modules required to obtain your certification.
Sample Grades (Exam Not Validated):
- Partial Oral Exam: Listening: 30% | Speaking: 72%
- Partial Written Exam: Reading: 65% | Writing: 38%
- Complex Exam (Total): Reading: 65% | Writing: 38% | Listening: 30% | Speaking: 72%
📙 Practical Case 2: You have already obtained your certificate (Before August 2026)
If you passed your exam before August 2026 with an overall average of at least 60% and no score below 40%, your certificate remains fully valid.
Sample Grades (Exam Validated):
- Partial Oral Exam: Listening: 45% | Speaking: 76%
- Partial Written Exam: Reading: 82% | Writing: 40%
- Complex Exam (Total): Listening: 45% | Speaking: 76% | Reading: 82% | Writing: 40%
💡 Important Advice: Although your diploma is official and acquired, certain demanding institutions, universities, or employers may require a minimum score of 60% in each skill. If you have any doubts about the requirements of the organization receiving your application, we recommend contacting them directly. If necessary, you will have the option to retake only the modules where you scored below 60%.
